Metadata Catalogue

European Geological Metadata Catalogue

The EGDI Metadata Catalogue provides access to standardised descriptions of European geological datasets, enabling users to understand the content, quality and origin of available data.

Metadata records describe geological datasets, data collection methods, spatial coverage and harmonisation approaches, supporting transparent and efficient data discovery. This information is essential for evaluating data suitability for research, modelling and decision-making.

By promoting consistent metadata standards, the catalogue supports interoperability and reuse of geological information across Europe.

Discover harmonised geological metadata across Europe

The EGDI Geological Metadata Catalogue is the central access point to standardised metadata describing structured geological datasets across Europe. It helps users understand what a dataset contains, how it was collected, which data model it follows and whether it is fit for a specific purpose—before downloading data or connecting through web services.

Why metadata matters (for research, planning and interoperability)

Consistent metadata makes it easier to compare datasets across borders, reuse information responsibly and integrate multiple sources in GIS and modelling workflows. By promoting shared metadata standards, EGDI supports interoperability and helps users assess the quality, coverage, and limitations for evidence-based decision-making.

What you can do with the Metadata Catalogue

  • Search and filter metadata records by theme, location, organisation or keywords.
  • Evaluate suitability using structured descriptions: methods, scale/resolution, temporal coverage, formats and constraints.
  • Connect to services by following links to related downloads or map/web services where available.
  • Navigate EGDI content by using metadata as the “glue” between tools, scientific themes and projects.

How to use the catalogue (3 steps)

  1. Open the Spatial Metadata Catalogue from this page.
  2. Search by keyword (e.g., “Critical Raw Materials”, “groundwater recharge”, “CO₂ storage”, “coastal flooding”) and filter results to narrow down your scope.
  3. Review the metadata record and follow links to related datasets, services, themes or tools.
