Inventory of 3D models

Inventory of 3D Models

The Inventory of 3D Geological Models provides a comprehensive overview of existing three‑dimensional geological representations across Europe, covering a wide range of scales, geological settings and modelling approaches.

This inventory supports the discovery of harmonised subsurface models that describe the geometry, properties and relationships of geological units, faults and other structural features. It is a valuable resource for researchers, educators and professionals seeking authoritative 3D geological information for analysis, planning and decision‑making.

By documenting available models and datasets, the inventory facilitates cross‑border subsurface understanding and supports integrated European geological knowledge, enabling consistent interpretation and improved management of natural resources, geohazards and underground infrastructure.

Methodology

The methodology used to compile 3D models inventory for GSEU was based on a collaborative, survey-driven approach involving the national geological surveys. Each participant provided metadata and contextual information for the most relevant 3D models in their country, following a common template to ensure consistency and comparability. The inventory focused on identifying key modelsthat are in use or considered authoritative at national or regional levels. The process also included harmonization efforts to classify map types, scales, and themes in a structured manner aligned with GSEU’s goals.

Map showing the bounding-boxes associated with each of the items in the inventory. Clicking on the map displays the values for the attributes of the items whose bounding-box contains the point you click on. It also allows filtering to show only maps associated with a country.

About the inventory

This inventory has been developed within Task 6.1 (Comprehensive metadata of European geological maps, map data sets and 3D-models). Task 6.1, led by the Czech Geological Survey (CGS), is part of WP6 (Geological framework for the European geological data & information system) in Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project.
